Land use and desertification in interlacing agropastoral areas of north China: A case study on Korqin sandy land

This paper focuses on the relation between land use and desertification in interlacing agropastoral areas of North china, by a case study on Korqin Sandy Land, Inner Mongolia. From a historical point of view, there is a repeated process of desertification in this area, which has relation to the historical process of land use. It seems that desertification spread when land reclamation expanded, and ecosystem went steady when pasture played dominant role in land use. Land use at present is interlaced with farming and pasture. Because of over grazing and excessive reclamation, desertification is in progress. As for the strategy against desertification, improvement of land use might be considered as follows: 1) to use corn and corn straws that is produced from farmland as roughage and to enlarge livestock; 2) to increase use of fodder such as corn and corn straws and to reduce grazing pressure; 3) to develop silage technology for small scale livestock
