Reducing nitrogen excretion of hens by feeding low-protein, amino acid-supplemented diets

An experiment was conducted with 320 white-leghorns to determine whether nitrogen excretion could be lessened by feeding low-protein diets supplemented crystalline ammo acids without any decrease in the performance. In the growing period (10 to 18 wk), the birds were divided into 5 groups and supplied the diets of CP15 %, 13 %, 11%, 11% supplemented with methionine and 11% methionine plus lysine. In the laying period (20 to 64 wk), the birds were divided into 4 groups and supplied the diets of CP17%, 15.5%, 14% supplemented with methionine plus lysine. 1. Although body weight gain were lower with decreasing protein content in the diets, supplemental methionine or methionine plus lysine to low-protein (CP11%) diets increased body weight gain in the growing period. In the laying period, no significant difference observed in egg mass between control diet (CP17%) and low-protein diet supplemented with crystalline amino-acids (methionine plus lysine), these hens brought slightly lower profit than those fed control diet. 2. Nitrogen excretion during growing period was approximately 40% lower for 11 versus 15%CP diet, and during laying period, it was approximately 25% lower for 14 versus 17%CP diet
