The improvement of nutrient availability by supplementation of rations with Saccharomyces cerevisiae**1026

A trial was carried out with 12 Lithuanian Black-and-White fattening bull calves to determine the influence of probiotics - live yeast culture Saccharomyces cerevisiae**1026 (Yea-Sacc**1026 by "Alltech" company, USA) - on rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility and daily weight gains. Yea-Sacc**1026 supplementation of diets was found to improve the growth rate of bull calves by 3.17% and reduce the feed intake by 2.80%. Supplemental yeast culture was beneficial in improving microflora activity in the rumen. Infusoria count and VfA concentration in the rumen increased by 9.33% and 1.29 mmol/100 ml*[-1), respectively, while the content of non-protein nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen decreased. Nutrient digestibility of diets tended to be improved by yeast supplementation. Digestibilities of organic matter, protein, fat, fibre and nitrogen free extracts improved by 3.25, 1.75, 0.26, 1.57 and 3.24%, respectively.
