In the present study the influence of forest drainage on the productivity of forest stands and the runoff of nutrients is analysed. The present study analyses the influence of forest drainage on the productivity of forest stands and the runoff of nutrients. The field data, obtained from 30 sample plots of the Vesetnieki Station of Permanent Ecological Research since 1963, show that the standing volume has increased from 40 to 292 m**3 ha*[-1). Irrespective of the gradual decrease in the ditch depth, the standing volume has been higher on sample sitesadjacent to ditches as compared to those halfway between them. Although statistically significant differences between the output of nutrients from drained forests via ditch runoff and the same indices for originally dry forests were not observed, the amount of N-NH4+, Ca**2+ and Mg**2+ was higher in drained forests and also the output of these substances via ditch runoff on a kg ha*[-1) a*[-1) basis was higher.
