In field trials from 1999 to 2000 nine alfalfa and eleven red clover varieties were evaluated. The most productive alfalfa varieties were "Birute" (Lithuania), "Radius" (Poland) and "Belorusskaja" (Byelorus), which gave maximum dry matter (DM) yields of 14 to 15 t ha*[-1). In the two years the highest content of protein was obtained from the varieties "Karly" (Estonia) and "ABT-205" (USA). Higher digestibility was reached with the variety "Treasure" (USA). In two years of use red clover ensured average DM yields of 8.6 to 11.4 t ha*[-1) with protein content of 10.0 to 14% and 11.6 to 15.5% in the first and second years of use, respectively.
