Effects of gamma radiation on the testicular cells of corn earworm (Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner))

The effects of gamma radiation doses, 100 and 150 Grey, on some reproductive parameters of male corn earworm pharates were evaluated. A group of irradiated insects was allowed to develop and the adult test group was obtained. The remaining adults were allowed to mate with normal females and their F progenies were collected. The testes of normal and irradiated pharates, emerged adults and their F1 larval progenies were obtained and histologically examined. Results show that the spermatogonia are the most sensitive among the different cell types in the testes. This pattern was much exemplified among pupae evaluated immediately after irradiation. The mean values observed on the number of spermatogonia were 112.2, 55.3, and 46.6 for the control, 100 Grey and 150 Grey, respectively. In all test groups examined, the spermatogonia were found to have reduced number and sizes due to radiation treatments. The cells atrophied among irradiated individuals. Significant variations in the number and sizes of cells and cell bundles among test groups were consistently observed in the primary and secondary spermatocytes, and spermatids. Although the apyrene sperms slightly atrophied in the adults and F progenies, the spermatozoa were found to be the most tolerant to radiation treatment
