Physiological effects of short-term dolomite loading on nubbins of the staghorn coral, Acropora nasuta, Dana (1846)

Branch tips of the coral Acropora nasuta were exposed to different levels of dolomite (0, 20, 40 and 100 mg/L) from 1 to 7 days following a randomized complete block design (RCBD). After each exposure period, oxygen production and consumption rates, calcification, and chlorophyll a concentrations were measured. Presence or absence of mucus was also evaluated. Results showed that nubbins exposed to 40 and 100 mg/L dolomite produced mucus throughout the 7-day exposure period. On day 5 of exposure, respiration rate and chlorophyll a concentrations were significantly lower at 100 mg/L dolomite concentration compared to other treatments on the same day. In all treatments, photosynthesis decreased on days 3 and 5, but increased on day 7. The experimental period seemed to be too short to show the impact of dolomite on calcification rate. Mitigating measures to minimize the negative impacts of beach enhancement using dolomite are suggested
