Benchmark survey on the status of abaca farming in Northern Samar [Philippines]

A benchmark survey was conducted on the status of abaca farming in Northern Samar in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, production and marketing practices, participation in other abaca related activities, income from abaca growing and other farming activities and their perceived problem and needs. Four municipalities in Northern Samar - Lavezares, Pambujan, Mondragon and Silvino Lubos served as the survey sites. Results showed that a typical abaca farmer in Northern Samar who was twenty five years old had a household of eight members. Abaca farmer had on the average twenty eight years of abaca-farming experience, an owner-cultivator of an average area of four hectares. Abaca farmer grew native variety which he intercrops under coconut. Handstripping and sundrying of abaca were done by the farmer. Suckers from the farmers' own plant were used as planting materials. On the average, abaca farmers produced 338.86 kg of abaca fibers per harvest. The household members are utilized such that the father and the elder sons were mainly involved in production activities while the mother had a dominant participation in the marketing activities. A typical abaca farmer earns an average yearly income of P39,454 derived mainly from coconut and abaca farming.
