Histopathology and histochemistry of fibropapilloma on the carapace of green turtles (Chelonia mydas L.) in the Baguan Island Marine Turtle Sanctuary [Philippines]

Based on the results of the study ten samples of fibropapilloma-like tumors from the carapace of green turtles Chelonia mydas at Baguan Island Marine Turtle Sanctuary, showed evident characteristics of papilloma as well as fibroma upon microscopic examination and evaluation. Therefore, the tissue samples taken from the carapace of green turtles showing fibropapilloma-like tumors can be characterized as fibropapilloma. The proliferative lesions of green turtle fibropapilloma observed in this study were consistent with the previously reported fibropapilloma of green turtles from other countries. Histologic descriptions of this condition has features common in benign proliferative skin lesions found in other species of animals such as fibropapillomatosis in cattle, fibromas, inflammatory polyps, and granulation tissues. The results on the use of differential stains such as Massons trichrome and alcian blue indicated that the extracellular matrix of the tumors is composed of collagen and mucopolysaccharide. The extracellular matrix found in this study is the same as that of the connective tissue ground substance present in the studies of gren turtle fibropapilloma coducted in other countries
