A demonstration of the 20-hectare compact farm technology was conducted for two cropping seasons, May to October 1998 and November 1998 to April 1999 in three sites in Leyte [Philippines]. Among the seven high-yielding varieties tested, the PSB-Rc54 gave the highest yield of 6.00 t/ha, while the lowest yield of 4.93 t/ha was obtained from PSB-Rc10. The varieties used by farmers in the non techno-demo farms gave inferior yields, with PSB-Rc18 having the highest yield of 4.66 t/ha; and PSB-Rc 32, the lowest yield of 3.64 t/ha. The Balanced Fertilization Strategy (BFS) used in the project consisted of 6 bags VMC organic fertilizer (1-6-1.5), 3 bags ammonium phosphate, and 1 bag urea (4-60-0) per hectare, applied as basal fertilizer. Pest and disease management was done through Integrated Pest Management (IPM), with weekly monitoring and agroecosystem analysis of the occurrence of pests and diseases. The 20-hectare compact farm technology was shown to be a more economically viable farming system than the present system, having an average MBCR [marginal benefit cost ratio] of 2.91. This means that for every peso invested for the techno-demo farm, a net benefit of 1.91 is gained over that of the farmers' practice. A strategy carried out in the demonstration project was the establishment of the Famers Field School, where the farmer cooperators were trained on the different component technologies for the techno-demo farms. Another strategy was the Farmers' Field Day, which was conducted in each techno-demo farm. This activity served as the venue for: a.) dissemination of information on the rice farming technologies being adopted in the techno-demo farms, and b.) for farmers to procure good quality seeds. The Farmers' Field Day was well received by the farming communities, as shown by the high attendance of farmers, estimated at 100 participants per venue
