Adaptation of an improved multi-crop solar dryer (MCSD) for selected key commercial crops
1999
Anon.
The MCSD is a type of dryer that follows the typical east-west orientation and uses solar energy. The energy is absorbed by the solar collector to condition the air inside the chamber to become suitable for the dehydration of the high value crops like mango and cassava without direct exposure to the sun. The structured design of the dryer enhances free convective movement of air to create a critical velocity that forces air across the tray of wet products until they are dehydrated without injecting any form of physical or mechanical energy source. In essence, the energy for air conditioning and dehydration process of the products was the energy from the sun and therefore without cost requirement. Experimental results showed the ability of MCSD to dehydrate casssava with initial moisture content of 65.7 percent to final moisture content of 3 percent in 32 hours of operation. Limited experiments in mango exhibited the ability to dehydrate the product from 73 percent to 10 percent final moisture content which is an essential quality factor for fruit dehydration
