Panama disease and a similar disorder (`False Panama') in the Canary Islands

Panama disease is the most serious disease of banana in the Canary Islands. To date, only race 4 of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense is present, with only one VCG 9(120) described so far in the Islands. Over the last few years, several cases of plants showing some external and internal symptoms very similar to those of Panama disease have appeared in several plantations. On testing, Komada medium reactions were negative and preliminary pathogenicity tests revealed that while the isolates were F. oxysporum, none of the samples proved to be pathogenic. In this paper, the preliminary results of an on-going project to fully characterize the disorder are presented. A 1998 field survey found that some new plantations established either on new (imported) soils or on soils left without banana cropping during several years were affected by this problem. Laboratory culture yielded mainly Fusarium spp. as well as other fungal species and bacteria, but this Panama-like disorder appears to be related to nutritional or edaptic causes, as soil imbalances were appreciable, or even to an abnormally cold winter which would further stress the plants
