Effect of drying parameters on the quality of pelletized aqua feeds

This study was conducted to determine the effects of different drying parameters (temperature, bin depth, and air flow rate) on the quality of pelletized aqua feeds; and to determine optimum drying parameters for maintaining quality. The indices used in the experiment were hardness, percent of dust, bulk density and durability. Three levels of temperature and bin depth and two levels of air flow rate were used in drying operation. The three levels for temperature were 43 deg C, 50 deg C, and 60 deg C. For the bin depth, the levels were 15 cm, 30 cm, and 45 cm. And for the air flow rate, the levels were 375 cu m/min of air/ cu m of pelletized aqua feeds, cu m/min/cu m (one-third blower opening) and 782 cu m/min/cu m (full blower opening). The results showed that varying temperature, bin depth, and air flow rate significantly affected the drying rate and drying time of pelletized aqua feeds. The final moisture content was not significantly affected by the parameters. Model equations describing the behavior of pelletized aqua feeds were also presented. On the other hand, temperature at 4 deg C, 30 cm bin depth, and 375 cu m/min/cu m gave the best result in quality test (physical) of pelletized aqua feeds. In the experiment, the hardness was found out to be 7.37 kg-f. The percent of dust was only 0.19%. The bulk density and durability were 513.89 kg/cu m and 99.6%
