Pharmacognostical and phytochemical studies on sariva (Hemidesmus indicus [Linn.] R.Br.) and comparison with other plants equated with sariva

Sariva, a well known drug of Ayurvedic materia medica, is reputed for its cooling, appetizing and blood purifying properties. The root of Hemidesmus indicus (Linn.) R.Br. is considered to be true Saliva, but a review of literature on Indian medicinal plants and survey of commercial samples of Sariva revealed that at present root and root-stock of five different botanically identified plants, namely, Hemidesmus indicus (Linn.) R.Br., Ichnocarpus frutescens (Linn.) R.Br., Cryptolepis buchanani Roem & Schult, Decalepis hamiltonii Wight and Arn., and Vallaris solanaceae O. Kuntze, are being sold as Sariva in different parts of the country. The pharmacognostical and phytochemical details of the root of H. indicus are presented in this paper. Efforts have been made to compare it with the roots of other source materials equated with Sariva.
