Pain, physiological and leukocyte responses of sheep under xylazine-ketamine anesthesia and conventional needle acupuncture analgesia

The pain response, heart rate, respiratory rate and total and differential white blood cell (WBC) counts were determined in 10 sheep during right flank exploratory laparotomy under either xylazine-ketamine anaesthesia (control group, four sheep) or conventional acupuncture analgesia (treatment group, six sheep) using needles inserted at Acupoints 26 and 31. Acupuncture stimulation produced surgical analgesia in five out of six sheep comparable to that induced by the xylazine-ketamine combination. Respiratory and heart rates were stable in the control group but decreased in the treatment group during surgery. On the other hand, total and differential WBC counts were higher in treatment group than in the control group. The results suggest that conventional needle acupuncture analgesia can be used as alternative to xylazine-ketamine anesthesia during abdominal surgeries in sheep
