Serum biochemical profile of captive Philippine cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), 1. reference values for aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, glucose, total protein and blood urea nitrogen

There were no significant sexual differences in the mean serum values except in glucose which was significantly higher in females (0.05). When age was considered, the youngest group (below five years old) had significantly lower glucose level than the five-, six- and eight-year-old groups; while the oldest group (10 years or older), had a significantly higher BUN [blood urea nitrogen] level than the youngest and six-year-old groups. When weight was considered, no significant differences in serum values were observed except for glucose and BUN. Data on female reproductive status depicted that the mean AST [aspartate aminotransferase] level of lactating monkeys is significantly lower than those of pregnant and non-pregnant/non-lactating monkeys. Moreover, pregnant monkeys had the highest AST and ALT [alanine aminotransferase] levels and lowest BUN level, while lactating monekys had the lowest AST and ALT levels and highest BUN level. Glucose and TP [total protein] levels did not differ significantly among the three female groups. Results suggest that the mean serum biochemical values may be affected by sex, age, weight and pregnancy and lactation status. The normal serum reference values obtained are useful tool for biomedical researchers who use Philippine monkey as experimental animal. However, in interpreting these values, factors as those studied in this research should be considered
