Evaluation of different NPK fertilizer application methods in a weedy field of rainfed wheat

A field trial was conducted on loam soil to determine the appropriate fertilizer placement methods for the production of weeds- infested wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under rainfed conditions during 1992- 93. Fertilizer placement methods comprised broadcast, deep band and along with seed. Nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium were applied @ 120, 90 and 60 kg ha-1 as urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP) and potassium sulphate (SOP) at sowing, respectively, while fertilizer drilled along with seed as treatment was half of the full fertilizer dose applied through the other methods. Plots where fertilizer was drilled with seed produced about 110, 72 and 69 percent greater dry biomass of weeds than unfertilized control, broadcast and deep placement of the same nutrients. Broadcast and deeply placed NPK fertilizer resulted in higher grain yield of 1137 and 1475 kg ha-1, respectively, than the fertilizer placed along with seed, but broadcast and deep band treatments were statistically non-significant from each other. Deep band treatment increased grain yield by 17 percent over broadcast application of the same fertilizer. Effects of fertilizer placement methods on straw yield followed the same trend as those on grain yield.
