Regeneration of forests by sowing and planting is based on the principles of forest genetics. It has been incorporated into the silvicultural regulations of Slovenia from the fifties onwards, through the usage of forest reproductive materials from adequate seed sources best suited to the forest sites. The first delimitation of Slovenia into seed regions on the basis of phytogeographical distribution has been accepted at the same time. This delimitation has been further developed into seed source units, which are combining similar forest sites on carbonate and non-carbonate ground rock material of different elevation zones. The application of seed units in practice and its delimitation on the map is difficult. Therefore, in the context of harmonisation of our legislation with the Directives of the European Union, we have started to establish a new foundation for the delimitation of regions of provenance in Slovenia. The legislative basis will be written in a new Act on Forest Reproductive Material, which has been under preparation. A better definition and thematic maps will be presented in the subsequent regulations. In this article the potential basis for delimitation of regions of provenance in Slovenia is proposed on the basis of the groups of phytogeographical districts.
