The influence of cover crop on the growth and yield characteristics of the grapevine red variety Refosk (Vitis vinifera L., cv. Refosk)

Due to requirements for a more ecological way of grape production, soil covering with adequate grass sward has become more and more impotrant. It contributes significantly to the production of humus and improvement of biotic traits of vineyard soil. The major negative effect which accopmanies grass cover in vineyards is grass cover stress. At the local red vine variety Refosk, negative effects of grass cover stress are not so evident in the fruit set but in the vigour of vines and development of grapes. With the exception of the first year the weight of pruned wood/vine was statistically the highest with conventional cultivating of siol. Throughout the experiment the yield was the highest with conventional cultivation though the differences between treatments were not significant. When soil was covered with grass-clover mixture the weight of yield/vine was approaching the conventional cultivation over years, while at spontaneous grass cover the case was exactly the opposite. Grass cover stress did not affect negatively on the sugar content in grape berries. A slightly lower quantity of yield/ha was compensated, at least partly, by its better quality. For the grass cover of vineyard soil both, the artificial and the natural way are impotrant.
