Effects of soil salinity on growth, yield components and photosynthesis of plant cane and first ratoon were studied on 3 clones, UT2, F160m and K200. Two buds setts were planted in 4 levels of saline soil, 0, 4, 8 and 12 dS/m, in split plot design having soil salinity levels as main plot and clones as sub plot at Suphanburi Field Crops Research Center between June 1995-March 1997. The results showed that initial soil salinity level decreased rapidly in 3 month after planting. Soil salinity levels in the beginning did not affect sugarcane growth, yield components, juice quality, chlorophyll content and photosynthesis rate measured at 10 month old. In contrast there were significant difference among clones. When the first ratoon was 5 month old, salt solutions were added to bring soil salinity to treatment levels. Soil salinity levels were significantly different among treatment at 6 month old and reached the set levels after 10 month. Soil salinity did not affect the height of first ratoon at 1-9 month, number of shoot per stool, number of millable cane per stool, weight of millable cane per stalk, weight of shoot tip per stalk, length, diameter, purity and fibre percentage. However, soil salinity significantly by affected several characteristics of first ratoon at 10 month in cluding height, weight of millable cane per stool, brix percentage, pol percentage, CCS, chlorophyll content and photosynthesis rate. The greater salinity level, the worse those characteristics were obtained.
