Evaluation of agronomic performances of mungbean breeding lines for breeding utilization

Total number of 171 mungbean breeding lines, derived from crosses by which selected early populations based on pedigree selection were backcrosses for 1 to 5 generations, from the Asian Vegetative and Development Center (AVRDC), were evaluated at the Kasetsart University, Kampaengsaen, Nakorn Pathom during dry season 1991. The objectives of this study were for evaluation of agronomic performances in respects of isolation for high yielding lines and/or desirable characters as well as to develop an effective selection strategy. Statistically significant differences among these lines were observed for all characters studied suggesting the possibility in isolation and utilization of desirable lines for further breeding. Wide range of variations were detected for time to flowering and maturity, plant height, seed yield and yield components as well as for the first harvest percentage. Correlation study revealed that seed yield was significantly positive correlated with plant height, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod, but was negatively correlated with the first harvest percentage. At the same time, negative correlation between number of pods per plant and 1000 seed weight was also detected. This suggested the significant influence of the characters compensation. More specifically, lines with greater pod production tended to lower seed weight, more increase in plant height, longer time to flowering and maturity and, lower the first harvest percentage. This would indicat the much difficulty in selecting several characters at the same time and thus, selection based on 1 or 2 characters at a time was suggested. Alternatively, based on the results of Stepwise Regression Analysis, 3 characters-plant height, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod were the most yield determinants and should be considered most.
