Utilization of some selected wastes as fertilizers for upland crop planted in Pak Chong soil

Five organic waste materials (OWMs) namely filter cake (FC), activated sludge (AS) from Amaritbeer factory, castor meal (CM), chicken manure (Chm) and "humus" waste (HM) from monosodium glutamate production of the Thai Churos Ltd, were tested as N fertilizer for maize planted in Pak Chong soil. Chemical fertilizer (IF) in (NH4) 2SO4 form at 400 ppm N and the check (Ch) were used as the standard and the control treatments respectively. Vegetative growth of the maize were best in CM-high dose (800 ppm N) treated pot. Second to this were ChM-high dose, HM-high and low doses, and CM-low dose (400 ppm N) which were equal in the effect to IF. All of the OWMs except FC could reduce vegetative growth period, which was in turn early tasseling and silking were clearly seen. the highest yield was recieved from CM-high dose as well. Second to this were CM-low dose, and ChM-high and low doses. This three treatments were also equal in the effect to IF. High N content was observed in the straws treated with CM, ChM, and AS-high dose, and in the maize seeds treated with HM and ChM-high dose. Among all OWMs, CM showed the highest efficiency as N-fertilizer with 53 percent N of its content available for the maize where as FC was the lowest with its efficiency only 5-9 percent.
