Effects of depth of sowing, variety and planting density on the leaf area index (LAI) and total dry matter (TDM) production of winter wheat were investigated in factorial experiment during the winter season of 1991-1992 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mean LAI showed diminishing pattern in all densities and attained the highest value at 25 cm and 10 cm level of spacing. Dry-matter production of the cultivars increased with the advancement of plant age but the leaf area followed typical sigmoid pattern with respect to time. Leaf area was more influential factor for accumulation of TDM. Thus it appered that TDM production was of greater importance which was influenced by both the photosynthetic efficiency and the expansion of the leaf surfaces as well as LAI.
