Efficacy of methyl bromide fumigation as a treatment for pests of orchid prior to export

Orchid is the main exported product of flowers and ornamental plants. Exported orchids are selected only of good quality, healthy and normally pest-free as far as the exporters could do. Pests are occassionally contaminated in the shipments in the egg form or the early stage of development. Methyl bromide (MB) fumigation is a widely used for post-harvested treatment but adverse affect may occur to perishable products. The study of MB fumigation to disinfest the mealy bugs (Pseudococcus sp.) and mite (Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker) showed that at the dosage of 24 g/cubic m for 2 hours was effective to eliminate the mealy bugs and mites. The phytotoxicity test showed that MB fumigation at the dosage of 24 g/cubic m 2 hours was not harmful to Brassolaeliocattleya Alma Kee cutting, and the flowering size plant of Vanda Gordan Dillon and Vanda Sunsai Blue, and the seedling size of Dendrobium Hawiian Brown. The dosage of MB 32 g/cubic m for 2 hours and 40 g/cubic m for 2 hours induced yellowing and falling off in the lower leaves of medium size and flowering size plants of Dendrobium Hawiian Brown. Finally, the orchid plants would recover during growing in the nursery.
