Stimulating effects of foliar K-fertilizer applied at appropriate stage of development of corn: Second field confirmation

Field experiment was conducted to comfirm findings from previous pot experiments that foliar application of K-fertlilizers on the third day after tasseling of sweet corn and field corn grown on soils with sufficient K supply was most effective in increasing corn yields and improving quality. The experiment was conducted in plots which had been receiving different rate of annual NP fertilizer, namely 0-0, 30-30, 60-60, 90-90, 120-120, and 180-180 kg N/ha/year for 16 years, to examine effects of 1.00 percent KCl, 1.84 percent KCl and 2.5 percent KNO3 solutions applied on the third day affer 50 percent tasseling on corn grown under field conditions. Results showed that foliar application with 1.84 percent KCl solution increased grain yield of corn from 3.78 to 5.20 t/ha and increased total dry matter from 8.49 to 10.87 t/ha only when corn was grown in plots which had been receiving 60-60 kg/ha/year. With the other rates of NP fertilizer, the fertilizer were not significantly effective. 1.0 percent KCl and 2.5 percent KNO3 did not significantly affect the yields of corn at all soil fertility levels investigated. Results of the present experiment therefore confirmed that the effects of timely foliar K-fertilizer could also be obtained under field conditions. The present results also supported previous results that balance in N and P suplies are effective for the K-fertilization.
