Resistance development and cross-resistance of cartap in diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.)

Insecticide efficacy test on Osaka susceptible strain (OSS) and Bang Khae strain (BKS) of Plutella xylostella (L.) were carry out under laboratory condition. For OSS, abamectin is a highest efficacy followed by teflubenzuron, phenthoate, cartap, Delfin (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki), benfuracarb, fenvalerate. While, the 6th generation of Bang Khae strain (BKSF6) is slightly varied respected in each insecticide. Abamectin is also the highest efficacy followed by teflubenzuron, phenthoate, Delfin, cartap, benfuracarb and fenvalerate. Development of resistance to cartap insecticide in Bang Khae strain by selection pressure technique. The selection pressure was conducted 14 generations out of 21 generations of insect reared in the laboratory during May 1991 to December 1992. After the course of selection pressure, a relatively high resistance to cartap was obtained. Resistance ratio (RR) values at the LC50 of the selected BKS against cartap at 18th, 20th, 21th generation were 108.52, 105.03 and 102.61 respectively. No cross-resistance was detected to phenthoate, benfuracarb, fenvalerate, teflubenzuron, Delfin and abamectin in cartap selected Bang Khae strain. The LC50 values of cartap resistance strain at 18th, 20th, 21th generation were slightly equally to the LC50 of OSS but less than BKSF6 for each insecticides except benfuracarb and teflubenzuron.
