[Effectiveness of an intensive production technology for sugar beet]
2000
Pastukh, Yu.A.
The article concerns the issues of sugar beet production, its crop yield, sugar production and sector's profitability. The decline in sugar beet performance is caused by a catastrophic decrease of the capital investment into the material and technical provision of the sector. As estimated by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, in 1999 the provision of farms with the agricultural machinery and the level of its wear stood at: tractors - 70 and 57 %; cultivators 86 and 61 %; sowing drills 85 and 63 %; sugar beet harvesters - 86 and 59 %. In the sugar beet industry there is a trend towards turn from the intensive technologies to extensive ones. The list of industry's drawbacks is given. The necessity is substantiated to intensify investment activities and to use intensive technologies. Technologies like those are developed in the Sugar Beet Institute of UAAS and they provide crop yield at the level 35-50 tonnes per hectare, sugar production - 5-7, beet tops - 20 tonnes per hectare when minimum labour consumption and expenditures. Effectiveness of growing sugar beet by means of using the Ukrainian technology is confirmed by the experience of its introduction in the peasants' union "Nezalezhnist" (Independence) in Khmelnitsky oblast. The structure of direct expenditures for sugar beet production according to the Ukrainian intensive technology is tabulated. The structure of costs according to the separate technological operations is determined. To optimize their use based on the economic calculations it is recommended to cheapen the most expensive tecnological operations. This is expected to make it possible to reduce expenditure part of the technology, that is to increase the effectiveness of the entire production process
