Biochemical characteristics of winter-growth sweetpotato in the Red River Delta

The chemical composition of 28 sweetpotato genotypes grown during the winter period in the Red River Delta (RRD) was determined. Marked varietal differences were found in the levels of dry matter (DM), starch, sugar, minerals and carotene. DM and starch appeared to be lower in the winter grown sweetpotato than the spring-summer crop and inversely correlated with total sugar content. Application of the plant growth regulators, NAA and CCC 35 DAP onwards significantly improved yield capacity. Storage of roots under simple and naturally ventilated conditions adversely decreased starch content and carotene level. Great varietal variability in DM and the high seasonal correlation of this trait suggests that selection for improved DM under winter growing conditions may be possible
