The systematic control of the quality of the river Danube is essential in respect of the water supply of Budapest (Hungary). In the last years the water quality of the river did not deteriorate in respect of organic pollutants according to bacteriological and toxicological indicators. Only microscopic biological tests have shown changes which were presented partly by unexpectedly emerging, and relatively short lasting biololgical overproduction, partly by in the transformation of the characteristic groups of living organisms. This was especially distinguished by the growth of the number of pikoalgae. The present water quality of the Danube allows the use for drinking water supply after filtration through gravel and sand layers along the bank of the river needing only minor treatment.
