Influence of sulphate process input variables on poplar pulp yield and properties

This paper presents the results obtained in the research which examined all important (structural, physical and chemical) properties of wood of three poplar clones: Populus x euramericana cl. I-214, and cv. Robusta, and Populus deltoides cl. 618, as raw material for sulphate pulping process. Pulping of chips was done in a rotation laboratory digester according to the previously defined plan. On the basis of the factorial plan of the experiment, two levels of input variables of the process of sulphate pulping (max cooking temperature, cooking time, wood to liquor ratio) were determined. Pulping yield, content of residual lignin and residual xylan in pulp were output variables in type 2sup(3) test. By the methods based on factorial plan of the trial, and by means of regression equations, significant negative influence of temperature was observed, which effected not only the pulping yield, but residual lignin content in pulps, as well. On the basis of these results, the hypothesis that temperature is a main input variable, and that pulping of poplar chips need not to be done at temperature above 170 deg C has been confirmed.
