Toxic elements content in lambs from the mountain regions of Serbia [Yugoslavia]

In this paper, the results of investigation of toxic elements content in lamb tissues were presented. The animals originated from 5 different mountain regions. During a three year period (1996-1998), 51 samples were analysed. In accordance with the monitoring programme, the arsenic content was determined in liver, whereas the lead, cadmium and mercury content were determined in liver and kidney. Also, the copper content was determined in liver. The toxic elements content was determined by AAS method (flame and "cold vapor" techniques), as well as spectrophotometric method. The results were statistically processed. As it can be seen from the presented data, samples beyond the legally permitted limits for arsenic were found only in one region (2.00%), and in two regions with increased copper content (10.40%). In our opinion, since there was a small percentage of samples above the legal maximum, comparing with total number of samples, this occurrence might be reduced. Other results point to the fact that lamb meat mountain regions of Serbia (Yugoslavia) represents a safe foodstuff.
