Influence of sprinkling [irrigation] on the physico-mechanical properties of chernozem and humogley

The investigations in irrigation system "Donje Polje" in Surcin, Serbia (Yugoslavia) were performed in order to establish the influence of long term sprinkling on some more important physico-mechanical properties of carbonated chernozem and noncarbonated humogley. Under the influence of long term irrigation, there occurred a significant decrease of physico-mechanical properties of the irrigated chernozem in comparison to the nonirrigated one, because of a substantial decrease of CaCO3 and humus. Namely, in the irrigated chernozem, a decrease of humidity was found at the lower plasticity limit and the initiation of stickness. It was found that the arable horizon (0-30 cm) of the irrigated chernozem is more susceptible to lasting deformities from being threated on moist condition, while the surface part of the arable horizon (0-10 cm) has a greater tendency to form a crust due to instability of structure aggregates. It has been established that the irrigated chernozem has significantly lower carrying capacity and that an unfavourable consistency condition of the soil lasts longer than in nonirrigated soil. There were not found any substantial differences in the change of rheological properties between the investigated varieties of humogley due to the influence of long term irrigation.
