The complexity of tree organization, their longevity, mechanism of reproduction, heredity, variability, senescence and their dependence on environmental factors in the fact that we still do not have a generally accepted theory of tree ontogeny. Different levels of the study of tree ontogeny presented in the paper, at the level of species, population, individual organisms and cells, will stimulate further, primarily experimental, research.
