The productive characteristics of 32 Yugoslav and foreign cultivars, lines and populations of alfalfa in the agroecological conditions of eastern Serbia (Yugoslavia) were investigated. According to the results obtained, it can be seen that the greatest yields of green forage and dry matter (hay) were obtained from the cultivars adapted to the unfavourable ecological conditions of eastern Serbia, at which the autochthonous populations from this region (Zajecarska 83 and Krajina) and the population Kandalica, as well as the cultivars NS Backa, Osjecanka 66 and Debarska, were used as the initial material for selection. The lowest yields were obtained from the foreign cultivars Sinalfa, Resis and Elga. The average yearly yield of green forage ranged from 40.42 t/ha at the cultivar Zajecarska 83 to 33.08 t/ha at the cultivar Elga. The cultivar Zajecarska 83 achieved also the greatest yield of hay (11.32 t/ha), while the lowest yield of dry matter (8.45 t/ha) had the cultivar Resis.
