Cissus populnea Guill. and Perr. (Vitaceae) is a strong woody liana in West-African savannas, which watery sap is used as drinking water by diverse rural people. The sap is studied from a quantitative and qualitative point of view. The amount of sap collected depends upon the season, extracting techniques, as well as of the part of stem used. These factors have to be taken into account to obtain a large flow of sap. Regarding the qualitative study, the gustative and chemical characteristics confirm that the sap is drinkable; nevertheless the high potassium content should be noted.
