The article presents basic information on the physiological role of selenium and diseases caused by selenium deficiency, describes general diagnostic procedures, summarises results published in papers by a team engaged in the development of diagnostic systems for selenium deficiency in cattle, and specifies practical recommendations concerning the selection of animals to be examined, procedures of clinical and laboratory diagnostics, and interpretation of results.
