Structure of young larch stands in connection with thinnings

At present, European larch (Larix decidua) stands occupy ca 14 % of substitute tree species (STS) stands area of the Ore Mts. Aim of the presented study was to find, when it is possible to start with thinning and what kind of thinning regime is more suitable in connection with functions as STS stands. For investigation of this problems, experimental series Kalek (forest district Cerveny Hradek) was founded in 1999. The experiment consists of two partial comparative plots: variant without thinning and variant with thinning (negative selection from above). It was found, that canopy of experimental young larch stands originated from plantation of 3 - 4 thousand plants per hectare is closing at the top height 5 - 6 m (the age of 10 - 12 years) and, at this time, the diameter of stems and their stability is highly differentiated (h/d ratio of the thinnest achieved 140 and of the thickest trees 60). In 2000 (the age of 13 years), diameter increment was higher (significant difference) on the trees from border row comparing with the trees from inside row. This fact indicates elevated competition inside stand, i.e. the need of thinning.
