The future of the utilisation of sewage sludge in agriculture including trends at the European level

This paper tries to identify various factors that influence the utilisation of sewage sludges in agriculture. We take a look at statistical trends and at the most important influencing factors: ecology, economy and social aspects. The current knowledge about the benefits and potential harmfull effects of the utilisation of sewage sludges and the trends in European legislation are also presented. The author's conclusion is that a safe and reliable forecast of the future is only possible at the regional level and for a limited period of time. The aspect of safety of ecological systems is often not given priority because of economic constraints, and ecological risks are becoming bigger. That is why one should be cautious to recommend the utilisation of sewage sludges in agriculture as the system of the future.
