Parallel determination of total thyroxine and thyrotropin concentrations in diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism in the dog

The objective of the work was to verify the validity of parallel determination of total thyroxine (T4) and thyrotropin (TSH) concentrations in the diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism in the dog. T4 and TSH concentrations were determined by chemiluminiscence immunoassay in the serum of 117 dogs: 40 negative controls, 66 dogs with euthyroid sick syndrome and 11 patients with primary hypothyroidism. The average T4 and TSH concentrations in healthy dogs were 25.8 nmol/L and 0.17 ng/mL. In patients with primary hypothyroidism the T4 concentrations were low in 10 out of 11 cases (10.12 nmol/L), while the TSH concentrations were high (2.9 ng/mL). The average T4 concentration in patients with euthyroid sick syndrom was 11.7 nmol/L, while the average TSH concentration was 0.14 ng/mL. The concentration of T4 was significantly higher in healthy dogs compared to the dogs with primary hypothyroidism or euthyroid sick syndrome. The concentration of TSH was significantly higher in the dogs with primary hypothyroidism compared to the healthy dogs and the dogs with euthyroid sick syndrome. Parallel determination of T4 and TSH represents a highly sensitive and specific method which is suitable for differentiating between primary hypothyroidism and other diseases that significantly reduce T4 concentrations.
