Content of microelements and extraneous elements in the leaves of birch

The content of microelements (Mn, Zn and Cu) and extraneous elements (Pb, Cd and Al) were determined in leaves of birch growing in the region of the eastern Ore Mts. and Decin Sandstone Upland. They were assessed in relationship to the transect (Klasterec, Janov, Litvinov and Sneznik), to the elevation above sea level, age class of stand and nutrition of trees. Except for the zinc content, contents of other elements in birch leaves were different in individual transects. Differences were also found at the transect different elevations, but without any regular dependence. The content decrease trend at higher elevations of the eastern Ore Mts. transects was observed in Mn, Cd and partly also in Al. In the Sneznik transect, the content in birch leaves was increasing in older stands in all elements except for Mn. Regarding the criteria for element content as nutrient, Mn and Zn contents were optimal/higher, that of Cu was insufficient. In the extraneous elements assessed from the viewpoint of potential negative effects, Pb and Al contents were at the natural background level, that of Cu was common up to excessive.
