A general framework of fish ontogeny: a review of the ongoing debate

Different approaches to definitions used to delimit and classify fish ontogeny intervals, especially during early life history, are reviewed, discussed and commented in order to simplify, generalise and, in some reasonable extent, to unify them, especially in studies of the European freshwater fishes. The thresholds separating subsequent life history periods, types of ontogeny and concepts for metamorphosis, direct and indirect development were discussed. No principal differences exist between the transitory and indirect types of development and that terms like larva and metamorphosis should follow a convention in ichthyology, regardless of whether metamorphic processes are manifested suddenly in a relatively short interval of development or if they progress gradually in minor consecutive changes and during several developmental steps. It was recommended to avoid using the confusing term "alevin" in scientific literature.
