Beer - beverage with the lowest heavy metal content

Two hundreds of beer samples were analyzed for zinc, cadmium, copper, and lead concentrations by galvanostatic stripping chronopotentiometry (GSCP). The average concentrations were as follows: 55.4 microg/L, 0.2 microg/L, 32.6 microg/L, and 6.5 microg/L, respectively. The results obtained by GSCP were confirmed by mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. As lead concentration was relatively high, fifty samples of wine and soft beverages were analyzed for lead concentration. The average results were 7.5 microg/L and 41.8 microg/L for soft drinks and wines, respectively. A comparison of concentrations of heavy metals in raw material and beer showed that only 1 % of zinc and cadmium, 9 % of copper, and 2 % of lead had passed from raw materials to the final product.
