The aim of the study was to investigate the quantitative variability of the content of mineral elements, carbohydrates, photosynthetical pigments and epicuticular waxes in the needles of different ages of Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris. The ageing of needles led to an increase in content of Ca and S and a decrease in the concentration of N, P and K. The content of soluble carbohydrates and starch was in polynomial correlation with needle age, reading the maximum in 1- and 2-year-old needles. Analogous behaviour was observed in photosynthetical pigments, which evidence a strong decrease in 5-years-old needles. The amount of epicuticular waxes of conifer needles showed a decreasing tendency in older needles
