The paper examines the increasing role of soil testing and plant analysis laboratories in providing analytical data needed for planning increased agricultural production and environmental protection necessary to meet other demands of the ever increasing world population. It outlines the attributes of a good soil testing and plant analysis service and its component parts from field sampling through analysis and interpretation of analytical data to making fertilizer recommendations. The role of calibration of soil and plant test methods and correlation with field and green house fertilither trials as the best means for refining fertilizer recommendation and transferring results to farmers is stressed. The importance of a well-equipped and staffed laboratory to provide reliable data is underlined, so is the role of the extension service and the critical need for collaboration between extension, research and analytical services in the successfully transfer of the results to farmers. In conclusion, summary recommendation methods and prodedures as well as the organizational and financial aspects necessary for the operation of successful soil testing and plant analytical service are examined.
