A study on the effect of supplementation on egg per gram faeces and hematological parameters in lambs infected with gostrointestinal nematods

A study was conducted to investigate the influence of concentrate supplementation on egg per gram (epg), packed cell volume (PCV), Hemoglobin (Hb), serum albumin and total protein concentration of Black Head Persian labms infected with mixed species of gastrointestinal mematods. Thirty labms, 5-7 months old were placed in a factorial experiment under two levels of infection (with 2500 L3 larvae and without) and three levels of supplementation (0, 100 and 200 gram per animal per day) with crude protein (CP) content of 175 g/kg DM. The animals were dewormed and confinued in individual pens during the entire period. All animals were fed grass hay sprayed with urea solution ad lip. The larvae were administered orally on weekly interval for five consecutive weeks. Faecal and blood samples were collected immediately before dosing and there after every two weeks started from second and fourth week of infection upto the end of the study period, respectively. Supplemented animals had significantly higher PCV (27.5 and 29.4 vs. 24.5%), Hb (87.9 and 92.2 vs 78.8 g/l), serum albumin (30.1 and 31.2 vs 28.7 g/l) and serum total protein (51.5 and 49.7 vs 44.9 g/l) for hundred and two hundred gram supplemented compared to unsupplemented animals. Infection significantly reduced PCV (25.2 vs 29%), Hb 80.5 vs 92.1), serum albumin (28.7 vs 31.6 g/l and serum total protein (46.4 vs 51.0 g/l for infected and uninfected animals respectively. Unsupplemented infected group had very high epg (8912) and very low PCV (20%) at 4th week of infection. It was concluded that the results obtained revealed that concentrate supplementation has reduced the pathogenic effect of nematode parasites.
