A survey of the abundance of leafhopper species, and the damage caused to crops by them was conducted in Kent in 1996. Edwardsiana crataegi was identified as the main species on apple, with E. rosae also present in small numbers. These species were also found on hawthorn windbreaks, but not on alder. Leaf damage, characterised by a white speckling, was most severe in the centre of the trees. Contamination by frass was seen generally to occur at between 1-10 frass specks per apple. The insecticide chlorpyrifos was ineffective against E. crataegi, although good control of the leafhopper was obtained by spraying with carbaryl
