The layering conditions of the safu have been optimised. Successful aerial layering requires that several factors be considered, mainly: shoots' origin and diameter, thickness of their bark, substrate nature and effect of growth regulators. The layering of orthotrope or plagiotrope shoots with large diameter and thick bark produced a high proportion of roots, while severing needed five months. The use of growth regulators reduced severing time, the best results being obtained with AIB alone, with severing of layers at the third month after setting the substrate, thus gaining two months over untreated control
