After its first occurence in 1981 Diaporthe helianthi (anamorph: Phomopsis helianthi) become one of the most destructive sunflower pathogens in Hungary. The significance of the pathogen is aggravated by the fact that the effectiveness of chemical protection is not always satisfactory. In the present experiments, infection biological studies were made on stem debris collected from the Trans-Tisza region (Eastern Hungary). Observations on infection dynamic were also made for almost 50 sunflower hybrids between 1998 and 2000. Studies on the mycelium growth of the fungus showed 12 Celsius-grad to be the minimum, 26-27 Celsius-grad the optimum, and 34 Celsius-grad the maximum temperature. Sexual fruiting bodies, or perithecia, develop in large numbers in the spring.
