Due to water regulation and water contamination it was detected on several occations that burbot populations are becoming more rare in 5 rivers: the Danube, the Ipoly, the Raba, the Tisza and the Bodva between 1979and 2000. Accompanying species (43 species sampled) were evaluated, including their needs and growth rates as well as an artificial propagation programme of 3-6 year old burbot. Our aim was to collect detailed information on the distribution and populations of an evasive, aboriginal fish species.
