S-metolachlor is a new ratio of the two pairs of enantiomers of previous metolachlore. S isomers being circa ten times more active than R isomers, the new ratio allows a significant reduction of use rates, with the same field performance as with metolachlore. The new range rate is 1200-1900 g/ha instead of 2000-3000 g/ha. S-metolachlor provides a high level of grass weed control in various spring crops, especially maize. The period of application, due to mode of action of S-metolachlor, is preferentially pre-emergence. In specific situations, ppi applications, or early post, are possible. The practical duration of activity is around six weeks, allowing a control of late germinations. S-metolachlor is also active against dicot weed, with less regular control than against grasses, and then is preferably used in combination with appropriate dicot partner in mixture or programme. Crop selectivity is excellent, and the product is presently registered in maize, sweet corn (formulation including safener benoxacor), sunflower and sorghum (pre-emergence)
